The Bright Sessions: A Review

Written and directed by Laura Shippen. Sound production by Mischa Stanton.

“The Bright Sessions is a science fiction podcast that follows a group of therapy patients. But these are not your typical patients – each has a unique supernatural ability. The show documents their struggles and discoveries as well as the motivations of their mysterious therapist, Dr. Bright.”

The Bright Sessions is a podcast that fits into the niche of things we readers look for when immersing ourselves in books: carefully developed characters, a compelling world, and impeccable writing. Each episode of the podcast focuses on a specific patient of Dr. Bright’s. Each patient is an “atypical”- a person with supernatural abilities and powers. The main characters consist of Sam, a time traveler; Chloe, a mind reader; Caleb, an empath; and Damien, a sort of mind controller.

After we have become familiar with the characters after the first few episodes do we begin to understand the story: Dr. Bright’s brother, Mark, was kidnapped by an organization known as The AM, whose purpose is to collect data on as many atypicals as they could. Seeing that Mark is one of the strongest atypicals known to them, with the ability to mimic others’ powers, they kidnapped him for their experiments in order to gain more knowledge on the atypical phenomena. All the while, Dr. Bright is hoping that her patients would be willing to orchestrate a jailbreak with her to save Mark- and that’s when the story really begins to pick up speed.

The theme of a secret and morally ambiguous organization coupled with human experiments set the scene for an action packed audio thriller. The narration of the actors coupled with amazing sound production quality makes The Bright Sessions a cinematic masterpiece. Just as listeners are finally beginning to decipher and understand atypical biology, we’re thrust into the world of the mysterious AM. The Bright Sessions certainly knows how to keep the audience on edge!
